There she meets the kind, and intelligent, but horribly deformed sole caretaker/librarian of the The Sanctuary, Milo. Despite his artistic talent, and kindness, Milo's appearance makes him a bit of a recluse. Emmy's presence, however, makes Milo begin to question if being alone is really preferable. Emmy soon learns that beneath his exterior is a gentle, beautiful soul. The two soon become friends, and cautiously something more. But Milo's grandfather is the no-nonsense sheriff Farlow.
